Presented by Anton Vigenser from SEEDS Bushland Restoration on
8th September
Anton Vigenser from Seeds Bushland Restoration walked a group of enthusiastic land carers through a variety of weeds and the best methods to remove them.
Anton pointed out that timing is everything and sometimes you have more weeds than you think. The very nature of weeds means that they are fast, flexible, competitive and plentiful making them a tough opponent.
There are a variety of resources out there to help identify weeds including your Landcare group and iNaturalist (from the app store), but if you’re not sure then leave it in place.
The area where there are the least weeds is the best place to start your weeding adventure. This will prevent new areas becoming infested and slow the spread.
Winter months are great for hand pulling as the ground is soft and this has the added benefit of reducing the amount of herbicide used.
Cutting and painting and frilling-and-filling are other very effective ways of woody weed control. Knap sack spot spraying is best to be used for pasture weeds in order to minimise herbicide use if there are too many to dig out.
See our weed timetable for great advice on when, what and how to control in both pasture and woodland areas.
