The Balnarring CFA hosted an information session on preparing your horse property for bush fires in November. There were some interesting facts shared about how fires travel and there were some key takeaway points:

·      Decide what your triggers are for enacting your fire plan. Extreme or Catastrophic fire days?

·      If you are going to take your horses from your property you should do so the night before.

·      Remove all fly veils, rugs, halters the night before an extreme or catastrophic fire rating day.

·      Horses wait for the fire to come to them. When they need to, they will run through the fire front.

·      The more grass there is the faster and higher the flames will be.

·      Identify an area of your property that is well grazed and large enough for horses to be able to run through the fire front.

·      If you have front gates on your property that will keep the horses off the road then it’s a good idea to open the gates of your paddocks to give horses the best chance to escape the fire.

·      You may not be able to access your property for several days after a bushfire. Plastic troughs and fittings may melt. Ensure your horses can access a dam for drinking water.

·      Try to store hay in multiple locations to give yourself the best chance of having some remaining. This will be your horses’ food source while you are away.
