Back in October 2024, the Cardinia and West Gippsland Equine Landcare group hosted an insightful talk at the Speciality Tree Nursery in Lysterfield. The nursery is run by Hamish Mitchell and his family, who have built a reputation for their passion for trees and green spaces.

Hamish has created a cutting-edge arboriculture facility where they grow advanced and semi-advanced treesā€”both in-ground and containerizedā€”spanning over 100 acres! Every tree meets the high standards of Australian Standard AS2303, so you know theyā€™re top-notch quality.

Why Trees Matter

The talk focused on the incredible value trees bring to your garden, property, and the environment. Hamishā€™s presentation was not only inspiring but packed with practical tips.

Hamish's main message was that with the rapid and measureable climate temperature rises, we need to go out and plant trees, as many as possible and as quickly as possible to shade the earth and cool the atmosphere.

Here are his key takeaways:

  • Get Connected: Build relationships with knowledgeable horticulturalists.

  • Do Your Homework: Research trees for your property. Think about climate change and the long-term impact trees can have. Fun fact: thereā€™s some amazing industry research on urban trees with a 50-year outlook!

  • Use the Right Tools: There are tools out there to help you choose, plant, and grow your trees.

  • Source Smart: Make sure you trust where youā€™re getting your trees from.

  • Experiment & Share: Donā€™t be afraid to try new things and share what you learn.
